The monitoring and predicting components developed by the project has been combined into a practical tool so as to track specific objects or oil spills and get early responses for mitigation. CDRIFT-TOSCAv1 is a web-based interface aimed at tracking the trajectories of oil spills or search-and-rescue operations on the ocean surface.
As part of TOSCA activities and in order to assess the performance of the observation and prediction system developed by the project, circulation and dispersion experiments will be carried out in five selected coastal areas of the Mediterranean sea.
The report includes the list of instrumentation which will be used during the experiments scheduled in five selected coastal areas of the Mediterranean sea. In this framework, in addition to measurements of surface circulation by coastal HF radars, and to ancillary observations provided by glider, floats, fixed meteo-marine buoys and waveriders, the project intends to use as main instruments, suface drifters.
Monitoring and forecasting material transport in areas of high pollution risk is of paramount importance for controlling and mitigating damages caused by a maritime accident. Modeling systems (using atmospheric and oceanic conditions to provide pollutants dispersion forecasts) are becoming a powerful tool in the hands of local authorities and public administrations involved in environmental and maritime safety issues.
