TOSCA drifter « Spill Track » designed to provide more accurate monitoring and forecasts of oil spill position

The report includes the list of instrumentation which will be used during the experiments scheduled in five selected coastal areas of the Mediterranean sea. In this framework, in addition to measurements of surface circulation by coastal HF radars, and to ancillary observations provided by glider, floats, fixed meteo-marine buoys and waveriders, the project intends to use as main instruments, surface drifters. These Lagrangian instruments will measure the circulation and dispersion of the near- surface waters and the spatio-temporal evolution of eventual oil slicks near the sea surface. Different designs will be made available by partners for the experiments in view of assessing their water- or oil- following capabilities. The TOSCA drifter « Spill Track » specially designed to provide more accurate monitoring and forecasts of oil spill position in the sea will also be used for this occasion.
